September is Senior Pet Awareness month at Compassionate Care Veterinary Hospital of Charlotte. When your pet grows older, there are more issues that need to be watched after. Most of the diseases that tend to affect the older pet population can be detected early with semi-annual wellness screening. For your average adult dog and cat, wellness screening is usually recommended only yearly; however, when your pet gets older, that changes.
As you may already know, dogs and cats age faster than humans. Depending on the breed and size of your pet, the senior years can begin between 7 to 10 years of age. When they reach the senior age, the veterinarian will recommend wellness screening every six months. The wellness screening will include of the following:
- A thorough exam by the veterinarian
- Questions about your pet’s life style and well being
- Full blood panel
- Chemistries
- Complete blood count
- Thyroid screening
- Urinalysis
- Electrocardiogram
- Screen for abnormal heart rhythms
- Evaluation of medications
- Senior Wellness Life Plan
- Recommendations by the veterinarian for future visits or tests
- Diet and exercise recommendations
We dedicated September to senior care to help educate clients about the importance of keeping their senior pet healthy. As part of this month, we are also offering 20% off of all senior bloodwork. Remember, your pet can live a long healthy life if the right steps are taken.
